Here is an interesting new report on adapting to climate change on the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park (WA). Chapter 4 specifically addresses road management in the face of a changing climate. This appears to be the first example of a national forest specifically addressing their road system in the context of climate change in a formal report. There is a nice summary of their key points on page 36 (Box 4.3).

Previous Road RIPorter Biblio Notes have examined the impacts of off-road vehicles (ORVs) on various segments of an ecosystem, providing a great deal of knowledge on these impacts. In reviewing these articles, it is evident that scientific research has focused on the general impacts of single all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), but little has been done to assess the impacts of large-scale off road events, such as races or jamborees. Herein I review the available literature and government reports on large-scale off road events’ impacts on the environment.

Check out this video of salmon crossing a road - or trying to in the case of one unfortunate fish. While a little humorous (as least for us and maybe the dog) it's a graphic example of some of the results of heavy rains and flooding: culverts are blocked or undersized and fail, sending water and in this case, salmon, up and over the embankment and onto roads.

After years of research, and many public statements about the importance of forests for providing drinking water, the Forest Service has finally released their Forests to Faucets report and maps. Here’s a quick summary from their announcement:

We had a great day of looking at reclaimed roads and planting trees on the Clearwater National Forest last week. This is the eighth year that University of Montana’s Wilderness and Civilization class joined Wildlands CPR for a day in the field to see road reclamation first-hand and learn about our research and monitoring methods
