The guide gives you an understanding of how roads are built, where and why they fail, and how you can assess and influence road removal projects in your area. The Road-Ripper's Guide to the National Forests

June 11, 1995 - Keith Hammer    This is a revised edition of the Road-Ripper's Guide Keith originally wrote a few years back. In addition to clear how-to procedures for getting national forest roads obliterated, it includes detailed information about road density standards and how to apply them. Keith Hammer served on Wildlands CPR's Board of Directors and is chairman of Swan View Coalition in Montana, where he has instigated the legal closure of hundreds of miles of roads in the Flathead National Forest. $5.00 member /$8.00 non-member

The Road-Ripper's Guide to the National Parks

May 11, 1995 - David Bahr and Aron Yarmo   The guide provides background on the National Park System and its use of roads, and outlines how activists can get involved in the NPS planning process to get existing roads removed or new roads prevented. David Bahr is a 1990 graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law and is a member of the Oregon State Bar. He is a partner in Bahr & Stotter Law Offices in Eugene, Oregon, with experience in natural resource and public records law. Aron Yarmo is a 1991 graduate of the University of Oregon School of Law and is a member of the Oregon State Bar.

The Road-Ripper's Guide to Off-Road Vehicles

April 11, 1995 -    $5.00 member /$8.00 non-member By Dan Wright This is a comprehensive guide to preventing the use of ORVs on public lands and stopping the abuse they cause. Dan Wright, a dedicated wilderness advocate, began this guide while an intern for The Wildlands Project in Tucson, Arizona. On his way to an environmental law degree, his already extensive knowledge of the law relating to wildlands and ORVs comes through in this guide.

The Road-Ripper's Guide to the BLM

The guide describes different types of roads through BLM lands, the laws that regulate these roads, and the procedures for challenging ecologically-damaging roads through the BLM and the Secretary of the Interior. The legal information in this guide is useful and relevant to roads issues on other types of public lands as well.

Six Strategies for Effective Enforcement Publication

July 11, 2007 -     $5.00 member /$8.00 non-member Over the past two decades, advances in off-road vehicle technology have enabled riders to drive on nearly any type of terrain, up steep slopes, and onto lands that once were accessible only on foot. At the same time, the popularity of off-road vehicle recreation has soared. This report recommends six strategies for enforcement success. It is based on interviews with more than 50 public land managers, private landowners, citizen group leaders and volunteers, and law enforcement officers.

May 18, 2004 - Lauri Duensing   The National Forest Service uses the term "road decommissioning" to describe a variety of road closure treatments, from gates or earthen berms to complete road recontouring and restoration.

National Forest Policy Assessment

October 16, 2008 - James Burchfield and Martin Nie    At the University of Montana 32nd annual Land Law Conference of 2008 in Missoula, Martin Nie, Associate Professor of Natural Resource Policy at the UM, presented “National Forest Policy Assessment”, a report requested by Senator Jon Tester in January 2008 as a third-party evaluation and analysis on policy issues and a set recommendations on the USDA Forest Service.

Current and Potential Green Jobs in the U.S. Economy

October 16, 2008 - Global Insight   According to a groundbreaking study establishing a national Green Jobs Index, the U.S. economy currently generates more than 750,000 green jobs—a number that is projected to grow five-fold to more than 4.2 million jobs over the next three decades. The report, released by The U.S. Conference of Mayors, Mayors Climate Protection Center, is the first calculation of its kind to measure how many direct and indirect jobs are in the new and emerging U.S. green economy.

The Implications of Climate Change for Conservation, Restoration, and Management of National Forest Lands

2009 Update: Six Strategies for Success

May 29, 2009 - Wildlands CPR    In 2007, Wildlands CPR published Six Strategies for Success: Effective enforcement of off-road vehicle use on public lands. The report was a huge success and was widely referenced by citizens, activists and agency staff.  As off-road vehicle management problems continued, however, many states and even municipalities began identifying new ways to enforce off-road vehicles.  

Political Economy of Watershed Restoration Series

September 30, 2009 - Josh Hurd   Watershed restoration provides much more to society than just clear streams, clean drinking water, healthy aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, and thriving forests. It also constitutes an increasingly important part of rural and urban economies. Restoration employs thousands of Americans, many from declining extraction-based sectors of the economy, in well-paying jobs. It often increases long-term community vitality and quality of life. Watershed restoration presents a rare “win-win” situation to conservation and business communities.

Managing the Miles: A Review of Forest Service Road Policies and Practices

October 13, 2009 - Greg Peters   This report is the culmination of several months of research and investigation into the Forest Service’s road management strategies and protocols.  In 2005, Wildlands CPR sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Forest Service asking for any and all documents relating to the road system and the methods that the agency uses to manage and track this system. After nearly two years of negotiation, the information started arriving.

Legacy Roads and Trails Remediation Initiative Monitoring Presentation

March 2, 2010 - Adam Switalski   This PowerPoint presents a new project that Wildlands CPR is beginning this summer to monitor and conduct outreach on road reclamation and aquatic organism passage projects funded by the Legacy Roads and Trails Remediation Initiative.  Adam also highlights the monitoring and outreach that Wildlands CPR has done in the past on the Clearwater National Forest.
