Off-Highway Vehicle Abuse Can Ruin the Hunt

July 11, 2008
I stumbeled across the article below in the most recent issue of the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers journal. The entire journal is online in PDF format, but I've reproduced the article here to encourage more folks to read it. The author, Mark Clifford, was born and raised in northern California and completed a Ph.D. in Comparative Pathology at the University of California, Davis. His passions include hunting, fishing and habitat conservation.

New Report Focuses on Global Climate Change and ORVs

May 9, 2008
Earlier this week the Center for Biological Diversity and the Clean Air Initiative released the report Fuel to Burn: The Climate and Public Health Implications of Off-Road Vehicle Pollution in California, detailing the contributions of ORVs to greenhouse gas emissions. The report adeptly makes the argument that recreational use of these polluting vehicles should be regulated and included in the State of California's climate protection goals.

Huge Victory for Beaches

February 14, 2008
Some good news for beaches and beach go-ers! On Wednesday, February 6th, the California Coastal Commission voted 8-2 to reject the planned 241 Toll Road, (which would have been located about halfway between LA and San Diego), and protected the internationally-known surfing spot, Trestles, and San Onofre State Beach. Thousands turned out for this historic meeting in nearby Del Mar, CA, making it clear to the commissioners that the destruction of state parks and coastal resources is unacceptable.

Modoc National Forest accepting comments until February 15.

A Draft Environmental Assessment was recently released out for the Doublehead Ranger District of the Modoc National Forest that calls for closing 28 miles of Forest Service system roads and 6.6 miles of user created routes (for a total 34.6 miles of road) in the Medicine Lake Highlands Area. 45.4 miles of road would remain open to motorized use in the project area. This is an overall good proposal, and support for these road closures is needed.

Protect the Eldorado National Forest from Unmanaged Off-Road Vehicle Use

Place:
Eldorado National Forest

The Forest Service is proposing to open roadless areas of the Eldorado National Forest in California to off-road vehicle use, which could damage water quality, wildlife habitat, and quiet recreation opportunities. There are 2000 miles of existing roads and trails on the forest. Tell the Forest Service that’s enough!
