Grizzly kills follow Canadian Roads

Canada's grizzly bears are in the news again, and this time not directly because of the controversial bear hunt, but because of "...massive hunting mortality along B.C.'s highways."

The David Suzuki Foundation's Director of Terrestrial Conservation, Faisal Moola, said in the article that he is concerned about this high number of bears shot along the roads, because it shows how roads concentrate hunting.

"One of the things we've always feared is that when you put roads into an area, you provide access to hunters who would not otherwise have easy access to grizzly bears," he said.

Conversly, recent research by Wildlands CPR has shown that bears use decommissioned roads more than open roads, and any open road use was during the night hours, suggesting that bears use removed roads to avoid hunters.
