Western Governors making progress protecting habitat and linkage zones

I spent the last two days at the Western Governor’s Association (WGA) Wildlife Council (WGWC) meeting in Helena. The meeting focused on progress toward implementing a resolution for improving wildlife connectivity and linkage zones across the western states.

Forest Service Moves to Protect Important Area in Idaho

On Monday the Nez Perce National Forest took action to protect a sensitive and special place in Idaho from destructive ORV use. Reasons given by the forest include protecting wetlands and habitat for endangered species from further damage. Idaho Conservation League, The Wilderness Society, Friends of the Clearwater, and others have been working for many years to gain protection of this area from increased and often illegal damaging ORV use.
Talking Travel Planning with Region 1

Wildlands CPR, with the help of the National Forest Foundation and Regional Forest Service social scientist Cynthia Manning, brought together conservationsists and local Forest Service officials from Montana and Idaho to discuss the travel planning process and ways to reduce conflict. Discussion in the morning focused on different steps in the process, and on specific terms or concepts; especially travel analysis. Later in the day, talk turned to addressing the inherent conflict often witnessed during travel planning public meetings.
