Grizzlies and Canada's motor access in the news again
By Thomas R Petersen - March 10, 2010
Canadian conservationists called for limiting off-road vehicle use in grizzly bear habitat, in an article referencing the province of Alberta's recently released report on grizzly bear numbers. The province's report called the the area south of Highway 16 (connecting Edmonton to Jasper) a
"population sink," for grizzlies, which could support a sustainable population if
human caused mortality — the report highlights motorized access — is reduced.
Grizzly kills follow Canadian Roads
By Thomas R Petersen - February 26, 2010
Canada's grizzly bears are in the news again, and this time not directly because of the controversial bear hunt, but because of "...massive hunting mortality along B.C.'s highways."

New research on the impacts of postfire logging and wildlife
By adamswitalski - February 5, 2009
There is great debate over postfire logging. While some argue timber should be “salvaged” following a fire, an increasing amount of scientific literature has documented the ecological consequences of postfire logging (for review see Conservation Biology journal volume 18 issue 4). One such study recently published in Forest Ecology and Management and conducted in Alberta examined the impact of post fire logging on elk, deer, and moose. Hebblewhite et al.
New research suggests road decommissioning important for grizzly bears
By adamswitalski - November 3, 2008
Grizzly bears are on the decline in Alberta, Canada. Human-caused mortality such as over-hunting, poaching, and collisions with vehicles have dramatically reduced this population in recent years. While the decline of bears has resulted in a suspension of hunting of grizzlies in the province, other sources of mortality due to access continue to threaten grizzly bear persistence.
New study on the impact of energy production on birds
By adamswitalski - October 22, 2008
It has been well established that some bird species will avoid roads. Scientists believe that noise created from highways may disrupt bird communications which are important for establishing territories and advertising their breeding status to potential mates.
How many government decision makers are ATV enthusiasts?
By Franklin Seal - July 7, 2008
Apparently, some pro-ATV provincial officials in Canada used state funds to purchase some kiddie ATVs and the resulting controversy has stirred a call for a wider investigation of how all ATV-related regulations are being implemented.
The retired journalist who penned this guest editorial in a Halifax newspaper suggests that the Department of Natural Resources is getting pressured to forestall ORV route closures. Perhaps this points to a need to initiate a similar investigation in the Western US.
